Primal by Mark Batterson

Mark Batterson, best-selling author of Wild Goose Chase and In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day, takes his readers on “a quest for the lost soul of Christianity” in his latest book, Primal. Although many may expect this book to introduce something new, it is actually a call for this generation to return to Christianity in its rawest form – loving God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. According to Batterson, “Christianity has a perception problem. At the heart of the problem is the simple fact that Christians are more known for what we’re against than what we’re for.” Although Batterson is certainly not endorsing a Christianity free from truth and righteousness, he challenges every follower of Christ to “be astonished again” by introducing them to four elements of the Great Commandment: compassion, wonder, curiosity, and power.

Primal is immediately engaging and challenging to the reader in many basic but defining areas of life. Because of the simplicity and urgency of the message, Primal should be at the top of your reading list for 2010.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years by Donald Miller

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years is Donald Miller’s latest book, which boasts the tag line, “What I learned while editing my life.” True to form, Miller introduces his readers to real life circumstances and characters that tell the story of his resurrection from apathy and mediocrity to adventure and fulfillment.

Experiencing times of dullness or unconcern is a common obstacle all people encounter, even causing them to question the worth of their own life. In a more than transparent story, Miller takes his readers on a journey through his own personal struggles with purpose and meaning in life. Rather than providing a five step solution for jump starting a stalled life, the author brilliantly uses stories to challenge the reader to remember that “all of us are living stories, and those stories teach other people to live stories. And what our stories are about matters….”

Having faced times of dryness in my own life, I found this book very inspiring and worth the couple hours I spent reading it. I would recommend it for anyone looking for inspiration and adventure in what seems to be a boring and mundane life.
