Birds and Bees (and the Bunnies) 101

“Why does that bunny keep jumping on the back of that other bunny?” my six year old daughter asked. Typically, I enjoy watching all the wildlife roaming in our backyard, but this particular observation by my daughter immediately made me scramble for words. “It looks like that bunny is punching the other one in the back,” my eight year old son said as he decided to contribute to this already one-sided conversation. Although I really wanted to lie, I knew that it would be more beneficial to tell the truth, so as best as I could, I attempted to explain the basics to them. They seemed satisfied with my brief lesson in “Birds and Bees 101″ and then they went back to doing what they were doing before the naughty bunnies in the backyard attracted their attention.

What makes it so hard for us to talk about s*x? (I’m censoring this for the sake of filters. If you are not sure what letter goes in the middle, I cannot help you) Some of you are even cringing at the thought of me writing about this topic. Good news. I’m nervous about writing it also; however, it is important for parents to talk with their kids about s*x. Everyone else in the world is talking about it, so why shouldn’t parents join the conversation. I’ll admit that kids have a lot of questions and some are very sensitive in nature, but who do you trust most when it comes to important life issues, you or someone else. There are so many great resources at your local Christian bookstore to help you talk with your kids.

So the next time you see the bunnies in the backyard, don’t just tell your kids that they are playing leapfrog!

Any thoughts?

Wow. It's Quiet Here...
