Upon arriving home last Sunday afternoon, I noticed several cars parked nearby our house because our neighbors were having a tag sale. No big deal. I was able to maneuver through the street and pull into our driveway without incident. We had lunch as a family and then were preparing for our afternoon napping ritual. The kids read or play (naps are for babies), Leah naps, and I lay there starring at the ceiling thinking about church stuff. Prior to taking a nap, I had to use the restroom. Sorry if you are offended that I mentioned using the bathroom in a blog, but everyone does it. I was reading the latest issue of National Geographic when all the sudden I heard chaos outside of my quite confines. Doorbell rings – dog goes nuts – kids start running around saying “Someone is at the door! Someone is at the door!” I need to instruct my kids on what it means to lay low when someone rings the doorbell. My first thought was that it was the Jehovah’s Witnesses. I enjoy talking with them so they usually stop by a couple Sunday afternoons a year. My second thought was, “I hope my wife answers the door because I am in no condition to do so.” No luck. It seems that answering the door is under the man’s job description. The doorbell rings again so I yell out to see if my kids know who it is. Again, being inconspicuous is the key; but apparently my kids don’t understand “ninja mode” so they just ran to the door, starred at the person, and ran back with the report – “We don’t know who it is.” Frustrated, I quickly finished and rushed to the door to find a man just wanting to know if he could use our driveway in order to load something he had purchased at our neighbor’s tag sale. “Sure…no problem,” I said.
There are very few things I hate worse than being rushed. Being rushed makes me feel as if I have to make a decision now without having time to think; however, sometimes a leader is forced to make quick calls. How can a leader be ready to make instant assessments? I believe he or she must begin each day by submitting to be under God’s control. With the leadership of the Holy Spirit to guide our thoughts, motives, and choices we will be empowered to make immediate judgments.
Did you start your day by giving control of your life over to God? If not, whisper a prayer right now. You never know what decisions you will have to make today.
